The UPenn Effective Altruism group has been inactive since spring 2024. A small group and I are now reviving it!
I’m Hazem, a freshman in Mechanical Engineering at UPenn and one of two current organizers.
Current status:
2 organizers, 2 advisors, ~10 interested non-organizing members
3 socials held
access restored to club infrastructure (website, logins, PennClubs.com, etc.)
starting to pursue external support (i.e. CEA)
If you’re at UPenn and are up for long-term board/organizing work (expect 4-10 hrs/week), PLEASE reach out.
Also very helpful:
- pointers to EA-familiar students at UPenn
- advice for reviving uni EA groups
You can DM me here or email hazemh@seas.upenn.edu.
My alma mater! A completely irrational and sentimental upvote from me haha!
Glad you’re restarting the group! Good luck Hazem!
I just want to comment in support of this: it’s hard to realize how big of a “force multiplier” student groups can be. It’s easy to dismiss their influence from the inside when you’re in university with everything else going on. And it’s hard to see why they matter from the outside. But in reality, these hubs are really powerful incubators that generate life-long connections. Forget even just the local effects: the credibility they give to ideas, the ability to invite speakers to your university to give talks (which tend to be win-win-win situations), and the direct intellectual output they generate. The true, oversized value prop of these groups, is that they create pockets of value-aligned, high-agency kids who feel empowered to follow their intellectual and moral instincts as a community. I strongly encourage to take the time and energy to make them happen and to keep them going. :-)
Let’s do it.
