I think the name “karma” comes from reddit.com, caught on and was used by other internet forums to give a name to the “fake internet points” that users get for posting.
It’s definitely not an accurate reflection of a persons input into discussions on the forum, but having a positive karma is a strong indicator that a user is not trolling/spamming.
