What does it mean to have a positive impact? The effective altruism movement has some ideas. We’ll take a tour through the evolution of these ideas from development economics into the science of existential risks and the problem of AI alignment. Effective altruism aims to ground its ideas in a strictly rational picture of reality, while thinking in the most ambitious way we can.
I will introduce these ideas in a condensed form and hope to evoke a lively, critical discussion and get to know each other’s approaches a bit.
🚨I recommend that attendees go through some of the articles below and prepare your questions or objections—but feel welcome to come if you can’t do so in time.
The meetup will be facilitated by Daniel Friedrich, a Master’s student of research psychology at FHS UK and a co-founder of Students for Impact. This is the first meeting in a series in which we will explore the science of doing good and building a career with positive impact, adapted for the student perspective.
