2023 Open Student Workshop in Global Priorities Research—promoting intellectual and cultural diversity in GPR

Link post

The Global Priorities Institute (GPI) has recently opened applications for the four-day fully funded Open Student Workshop in Global Priorities Research in Oxford at the end of June. We invite graduate students, junior researchers, and advanced undergraduates from groups underrepresented in GPR or academia to apply.

This post gives some background on why we are organising this workshop as well as some further details on the event.

Global priorities research (GPR) is a relatively homogenous field. Intellectual and cultural diversity within GPR is important for several reasons. First, GPR aims to ask political, moral and empirical questions. Answering these questions well requires incorporating a range of perspectives to reduce bias and blindspots. Second, we want the field of GPR to attract the best talent regardless of background.

We also want to contribute to building a welcoming and diverse effective altruism community. We are impressed by the projects and efforts of Magnify Mentoring and hope to build on their efforts to give everyone interested in effective altruism the same opportunity to reach their potential and contribute to the collective effort of making the biggest difference.

This will be the second Open Students Workshop in Global Priorities Research. The first was conducted in June 2022 and attended by 23 students. The workshop received very positive feedback from participants.

The 2023 Workshop

The 2023 Workshop will take place from the 18th to 21st of June 2023 in Oxford. Participants will attend the 12th Oxford Workshop on Global Priorities Research (19th to 20th of June 2023) organised by the Global Priorities Institute. They will also receive personalised 1:1 career- and research-coaching from GPI staff members and other members of the global priorities research community; attend presentations and discussions on global priorities research, career planning and experiences in academic research; and participate in networking and social events.

Applications are open until 8 January 2023 at midnight GMT. You can find further information here.

Please share this event with people who might be interested in applying. If you have any questions you can contact the organisers, David and Bridget, with any questions (David.Thorstad@philosophy.ox.ac.uk / Bridget.Williams@philosophy.ox.ac.uk).
