This post seems to have a liberal bias. It references a previous post that argues that “donating to moderate candidates in contested states could be highly effective.” It then exclusively appeals to liberals:
[Y]our liberal family members may be willing to donate to political candidates.
And assumes conservative family members wouldn’t be interested in donating to moderate candidates or effective causes.
I recognize that, in practice, there is a real and important difference between pro-Trump conservatives and anti-Trump conservatives, and anti-Trump conservatives also may be willing to donate to these political causes. However, I specifically chose not to elaborate on this as part of my piece for two reasons:
Clarity and brevity of writing: The point of my argument is to get my audience to email their family members, and in general, I trust their judgment on who to email. There is no reason for me to outline in depth who might be a good recipient and who might not; that’s not the point I’m trying to make.
An attempt at “apoliticality”: I think it’s important that more people follow through with my proposal, but the EA Forum’s moderation makes explicitly political posts harder to find. By not elaborating on the political aspect of my argument and instead focusing on the action I want taken, I thought I could increase my chances of more people seeing this essay. To communicate my message with as little specificity as possible, I figured that telling people to ask their liberal family members to donate would explain my intention.
I apologize if this made it sound like I thought that conservatives are a wholly evil and homogenous group. I promise that this is not the case.
