EAGxCambridge 2023

We are excited to announce Cambridge’s first ever conference on effective altruism!

EAGxCambridge will bring together 500 leading academics, working professionals, charity entrepreneurs, and students to address the world’s most pressing problems, including existential risks, global wellbeing and animal suffering. The programme will feature workshops, talks, and conversations with major thinkers and doers in the space, such as 80,000 Hours, Charity Entrepreneurship, the Future of Humanity Institute, and the Centre for the Study of Existential Risk – as well as a careers fair and socials. Our venue will be Cambridge Guildhall, an historic building in the picturesque heart of the city.

Applications are closing soon!

Programme

Besides the main conference, we’re excited for the emerging programme of community-led ‘satellite events’, likely including karaoke, a pub social, an x-risk quiz, an after-party, a biosecurity picnic, an AI alignment hackathon, and more. If you have an idea for a satellite event you’d like to see or run, drop us an email at cambridge@eaglobalx.org.

Who should apply?

The conference is designed for people who have an understanding of the main concepts of effective altruism, and who are making decisions and taking actions based on them. Attendees should be living in the UK or Ireland, or have plans to move to the UK within the next year, and should be at least 18 years old.

We encourage applications from people with demographic backgrounds that are underrepresented in the EA community.

We’ve worked to make the application form as quick as possible, so if you’re not sure, please err on the side of applying. Drop us an email at cambridge@eaglobalx.org if you have more questions.

Application details

  • Application deadline: Friday 3rd March 2023 (11.59pm UTC). This deadline will not change and we cannot consider any late entries. Any late applications will be rejected.

  • Default ticket price: £100.

  • There will also be an option to discount tickets by 25%, 50% or 75%, and a free option for students. Please only use these discounts if a full price ticket would be unaffordable. If you are a high earner, there will also be an option to purchase a ‘supporters ticket’.

  • Please apply early! We are anticipating many more applications than available spaces.

Approximate schedule

The event will open in the afternoon on Friday. Saturday and Sunday will have full-day schedules with a closing reception ending around 6pm on Sunday evening.

The agenda includes:

  • Talks and discussions on the latest ideas and achievements from the effective altruism movement

  • Workshops to improve your thinking and execution

  • Meetups, networking, and social activities

  • A careers fair for highly impactful organisations

Travel expenses

We will be able to reimburse travel expenses (transport and accommodation) for some attendees based in the UK and Ireland. You can request financial assistance through the travel support section in the application form. Due to limited funding, we may accept your application, but not be able to cover your expenses. Please check the travel support policy for more details.

Volunteering

Volunteering is a great way to get experience of operations while making some friends along the way. You can express your interest in being a volunteer in the application form. You will be expected to commit up to four hours in the two weeks leading up to the conference, as well as at least eight hours during the conference. All volunteers will receive a refund for their ticket after the event. If you are accepted, we’ll send further details by email.

Help us spread the word
