Create an organization doing literature reviews and research on demand
Values and Reflective Processes, Effective Altruism
Create a research organization that will offer literature reviews and research to other EA organizations. They will focus on questions that are not theory-heavy and can be approached by a generalists without previous deep knowledge of the field. Previous examples of such research are publications of AI Impacts or literature reviews by Luke Muehlhauser. Besides research itself, this is useful also for: - it frees up the time of senior researchers - It can be a good training place for junior researchers. - it may enable a larger infusion of valuable ideas from academia.
I think that this is a good idea and something that READI could be interested in supporting. We have extensive experience doing reviews as research consultant and in providing related training (both as volunteers and professionals). One related idea that some of us are exploring, is developing a sort of ‘micro-course and credential’ to i) train EAs to do reviews and ii) curate teams of credential junior researcher who can to support the undertaking of literature reviews under the supervision an expert.
Would this be another organization like Rethink Priorities, or is it different from what they are doing? (Note: I don’t think this space is crowded yet, so even if it is another organization doing the same things, it could still be very helpful!)
