Movement-building/research/pipeline for content creators/influencers
Effective altruism
Content creators/influencers have (if popular) a lot of outreach potential and earning-to-give potential. We should investigate the possibility of investing in movement-building or a pipeline into this field. Practical research on how to be a successful influencer is also likely to be broadly applicable for movement-building in general.
Rather than a pipeline for turning EAs (of which there are few) into media creators and celebrity influencers, it might be wiser to go the other way, and try to specifically target media creators and celebrity influencers for conversion to EA. In my view, the quickest path to something like a high-quality youtube documentary series about EA probably looks more like “find an existing youtube studio with some folks who are interested in EA” than it does “get a group of EAs together and create a media studio”. Although the quickest path of all probably involves a mix of both strategies—like 2-3 committed EAs with experience in media getting funding and hiring a bunch of other people already working in media to help them build the project.
I’ve been talking about documentaries/videos because there seem to be a number of EA efforts currently to create media studios or etc. But a broader, 80K-style effort to build the EA pipeline so we can attract and absorb more media people into the movement also seems worthwhile.
“find an existing youtube studio with some folks who are interested in EA”-> This sounds very doable and potentially quite impactful. I personally enjoy watching Kurzgesagt and they have done EA-relevant videos in the past (e.g., meat consumption).
“But a broader, 80K-style effort to build the EA pipeline so we can attract and absorb more media people into the movement also seems worthwhile.” → I agree!
