LinkedIn thought leaders telling you AI will 10x your productivity. Podcasters with confident 45-minute takes on superintelligence. Techno-optimists whose argument is essentially “trust the builders.” And on the other side, a simplified AI doom discourse that has been memed and diluted into something that generates anxiety without producing understanding.
Do you really think these are the two main discourses? Outside my EA bubble, I hear a large discourse from the mainstream left:
AI will steal your data
AI produces slop
AI is eroding the truth
AI is bad for the environment
AI is only benefiting tech billionaires
All of which are at least true to some degree. I don’t think this discourse is unproblematic either, but it seems like an important one for politicians to use to argue for greater regulation.
