Just my impression based on anecdotes, but I’ve heard about more people from outside of the community trying to get FTX grants than I’ve noticed in the past (e.g. with Open Phil). The word seems to have ‘gotten out’ to a greater degree than before.
To bring in some numbers, FTX had a huge number of applications, so most of these must have come from outside the current community. And it seemed like the number was greater than expected.
To bring in some theory, it would make sense this is happening based on SBF’s fame and the strategy they’re taking (rapid, low overhead grants for a wider range of things).
So overall it seems plausible to me this is now happening to a greater degree than in the past, but I’m very unsure how much more, and how much of a problem it is. It’s probably semi-inevitable as you get bigger.
Interesting! This makes me wonder if it could also be related to the crypto connection. Crypto is full of opportunities to exploit systems for money, and some people do that full-time with zero ethics. That would lend plausibility to the claim in the OP about discords dedicated to it.

Agree that seems plausible. I also heard FTX had a lot of crypto projects applying for funding.
