As far as the mid-stage funding problem, I’d be curious about how smaller donors fit in -- let’s say those too small to fit into something like the mental health funders circle, so under 50k/year. It sounds like you, and others, have enough information to predict with reasonably good confidence which ~ 20 percent of year-2 to year-5 organizations will produce ~ 80 percent of the impact. But if that information filters down somehow to small donors, I’m unaware of how that happens.
I guess the easiest way to do that would be to set up a fund for mid-stage funding with grantmakers who were experts in mid-stage organizations in a cause area. At least in global health, I’m not aware of such a fund, as EA Funds in this area ~= GiveWell All Grants, the bulk of which goes to well-established programs for obvious reasons.
Indeed, I think having a separate non-GiveWell run global health fund would be really great. Most of the members of our seed network donate between 10k-100k, so that is also an option for folks in that range. But I do wish there were more cause-specific ones.
