I don’t think it’s a niche viewpoint in EA to think that, mainly because of farmed and wild animal suffering, the short term future is net-negative in expectation, but the long-term future could be incredibly good. This means that some variety of longtermism is essential in order to not embrace x-risk in our lifetimes as desirable.
