How small and short can a grant be? Is it possible for a grant to start out small, and then gradually gets bigger and sources more people if the research area turns out to be significantly more valuable than it initially appeared?
In general, yes it can be arbitrarily short and small. In practice I think EV, who does our operations, has said that they prefer we don’t make grants <$2,000 (? can’t remember exact number), because the operational overhead from them might be too high per grant to justify the benefits.
