What kind of criteria or plans do you look for in people who are junior in the AI governance field and looking for independent research grants? Is this a kind of application you would want to see more of?
Past experience with fairly independent research and access to high-quality mentors (so they are less likely to become directionless and/or depressed) are positives for me.
Speaking for myself: it depends a lot on whether the proposal or the person seems promising. I’d be excited about funding promising-seeming projects, but I also don’t see a ton of low-hanging fruit when it comes to AI gov research.
