Not to invalidate anything of what you said (which all sounds reasonable to me), another info bit: Marimo raised 5 mil $ seed in October (which is also a sure indicator that the startup will not be “just two people” going forward), and is growing relatively fast in terms of star count on Github (I’ve seen about +1k stars in about two months that I keep track of the project). VC route may be a blessing and a curse of course, but provided the underlying computational infra stays solidly open-source (which could also be jeopardised by VC money, though), even if the startup fizzles out, the underlying computational infra could still enjoy lasting adoption even beyond that, benefitting from the marketing push resulted from VC money infusion.
That’s interesting. But I agree that VC is a blessing and a curse. I’m hesitant to rely too much on VC-backed infrastructure, in a similar way that I am on small-independent-project infrastructure. I wish we had better mechanisms for this sort of thing, it could provide a lot of value to have more projects like this have more incentive-compatible ways of making money.
