Wow, the quality of the prose here is really nice!
Many of the stories in the competition so far are just straight fables or morality tales—by contrast, I really like the thoughtful, meandering style of your story. (Indeed, like a walk in the woods!) I like how the story is one part object-level discussion of what’s actually valuable about forests, one part free-association among several EA topics (The Precipice, ALLFED, economic growth, etc), and one part allegory about the need to prioritize one’s efforts and the longtermist vibe that the best reason for protecting the forest is to protect the unknown future potential of what benefits the forest might bring later.
