Talent may well no longe wish to apply to EA orgs in general after having had such a bad experience with one of the most prominent ones. This would be a shame, especially since other orgs may well actually have much better hiring practices!
I both descriptively agree with you and normatively wish this isn’t the case. I think the world will probably be better if EA orgs have more leeway to experiment, and more of a mandate for trying out new things without worrying too much about the “brand” or the amorphous sense of whether it benefits or hurts the EA brand/identity.
But in the world we currently live in, I definitely agree with you that EA orgs’ identities are coupled together in the minds of job applicants, and organizations in the ecosystem doing poorly makes it harder for others.

Exactly! I’m definitely going to think twice about applying to any EA organisation that requires such an involved application process.
