I think that not sharing the inspiration for a post is usually a bad idea (with some exceptions around material that is obscene or could be personally harmful to individuals). It starts discussions off on a foundation of confusion and makes it difficult for the author of the original work to point out misconceptions or add context. And if a discussion gets much attention, someone will usually want to know what prompted it, leading the original post to be shared anyway.
(There’s also the Streisand effect, where hiding material makes people more interested in seeing it. I think that people in such a situation are also likely to read the material more attentively once they actually find it.)
