Among our next priorities will be to re-evaluate Longview’s Emerging Challenges Fund and EA Funds’ Long-Term Future Fund in our reducing catastrophic risks cause area and EA Funds’ Animal Welfare Fund in our animal welfare cause area — as we last evaluated these evaluators in 2023.
Have you considered evaluating all evaluators of a given area in the same year, alternating between catastrophic risks, animal welfare, and human welfare besides catastrophic risks? This would ensure all the recommended funders of a given area were assessed based on the same methodology at roughly the same time.
Hi Vasco, thanks for the question! I think our ideal approach would look like what you suggest: i.e., us doing all our evaluations within each cause area in parallel. This would make it easier for us to be as consistent as possible in the standards we are applying to the evaluators and be more comparative. Unfortunately, in practice this hasn’t worked out in the past based on our own capacity constraints and difficulty coordinating evaluations to all occur at the same time. That said, where possible we still try to do at least two parallel evaluations in each cause area (although even this isn’t always possible).
