Why not include a standard application question asking “have you been rejected from other grantors for this project (or something sufficiently close to it), and if so, which?”.
The onus is on the applicant to be honest, but given we already operate in a high trust community I think there is reason to believe applicants would be willing to be straightforward here.
It adds more time, but not much, and gives whoever is evaluating it down the line a chance to reach out if they think it’d be worth it.
I think this is already done. The application asks if you are receiving OpenPhil funding for said project or have done so in the past. It also asks if you’ve applied. I think people also generally disclose because the payoff of not disclosing is pretty low compared to the costs. EA is a pretty small community I don’t think non-disclosure ever helps.
Yep, it’d be good if this was standardized more with a set list, though deciding which funders are relevant (Eg not getting NSF funding isn’t very relevant to LTFF, but getting rejected from Lightspeed might be) or not might be hard.
