This is a random musings of cultural norms, mainstream culture, and how/where we choose to spend our time and attention.
Barring the period when I was roughly 16-20 and interested in classic rock, I’ve never really been invested in music culture. By ‘music culture’ I mean things like knowing the names of the most popular bands of the time, knowing the difference between [subgenre A] and [subgenre A] off the top of my head, caring about the lives of famous musicians, etc.[1] Celebrity culture in general is something I’ve never gotten into, but avoiding TV, radio, and advertisements has meant that the messaging which most people are inundated with passes me by.
A YouTube video called 5 Songs You’ve Never Heard That You’ve Heard 1000 Times reminded me this morning of what a HUGE difference there is between the level of care/attention I have for music and the level of care/attention that I perceive as normal. I don’t think I have ever heard any of these songs before, and half of the musicians I’ve never heard of either.[2] Which is a little curious/odd/funny from a cultural perspective, since apparently the target audience has heard these songs so many times.
I suppose we all have our our areas of focus and specialization.
I’ve heard of the names of a variety of famous bands or musicians from the past few decades, but for most of them I’ve never bothered to spend time exploring what they really are.

If mainstream/pop music is a category in a pub quiz, I am probably not going to be of any help.
