I’d like to promote a norm of suggesting typo corrections via private message, rather than in comments. This helps to keep comments free of clutter, especially on long posts that might have many typos. The only person interested in seeing a typo comment is likely to be the author.
You could argue that typo comments help the author avoid getting lots of PMs from different people that point out the same typos. For now, I’d guess that very few people will send such PMs regularly, and that we should favor PMs > comments for this. This may change as the Forum’s readership increases, or if authors begin to complain about getting too many typo PMs.
