One hypothesis is that someone else was going to announce it, so it was decided it would be better if he went ahead and did it.

This was good, thank you! I didn’t realize some of these orgs existed. Did you see the recent post where ControlAI is asking for $50 million?
I do worry that the sense for what does and doesn’t matter for reputation, or how much it an action costs, might be miscalibrated? Arguably a lot of damage was done when AI policy and lab people consistently downplayed and softened their view that AI could kill everyone when it came to talking to the investors, government officials, or the public.
