The title “A case for nonviolent protest”, if I read it without prior knowledge, would make me think that you were arguing for nonviolent > violent protest, rather than nonviolent protest > not considering protest effective. But I’ve seen no serious support for violent protest within EA.
While there’s some debate on violence vs. nonviolence outside our community, it seems like this post is mostly about modeling the positive impact of nonviolent protest rather than directly comparing it to violent protest.
Perhaps a better title would be “A case for the efficacy of protest”, or “A case for public protest”?
Ah good point—I didn’t really think about this. You’re right in that this post is about nonviolent protest being effective rather than not being effective, with no discussion on how violent protest fits into this. I’ve changed the title to “A case for the effectiveness of protest” but not sure if it’s too late but hopefully at least it’s a bit clearer. Thank you for the heads up!
