Various approximations of the total number of insect individuals range between 1017-1019 (Williams 1960 , Hƶlldobler & Wilson (1990), Bar-On et al. (2018)).

This might be squints 4 years too late, but one can always use unicode superscript characters, in this case ā10Ā¹ā·-10Ā¹ā¹ā.
Or one could use LATEX (slightly more involved), writing 10^{17}-10^{19}, which results in 1017ā1019. Perhaps a bit out of place in this text :-)
