Why is OpenAI restructuring a surprise? Evidence to date (from the view an external observer with no inside knowledge) has been that they are doing almost everything possible to grow grow grow—of course while keeping the safety narrative going for PR reasons and to avoid scrutiny and regulation.
Is this not just another logical step on the way?
Obviously insiders might know things that you can’t see on the news or read on the EA forum which might make this a surprise.
I was a bit surprised because a) I thought “OpenAI is a nonprofit or nonprofit-adjacent thing” was a legal fiction they wanted to maintain, especially as it empirically isn’t costing them much, and b) I’m still a bit confused about the legality of the whole thing.
