[Question] Should surveys about the quality/impact of research outputs be more common?

I’m interested in people’s thoughts on the following questions:

  1. Do many research organisations, or individual researchers, run surveys about the quality and impact of their outputs? Why or why not?

  2. Should research orgs, or individual researchers, more often run such surveys? Why or why not?

  3. How should such surveys be designed, promoted, and analysed?

(Feel free to just address 1 or 2 of those questions.)

And for each question, I’m interested in how answers would vary depending on whether we’re talking about orgs or individuals, whether the orgs/individuals are explicitly EA or not, whether they’re in academia or not, and what their theory of change is.

Descriptions of and links to the sort of survey I have in mind can be found here and here.

Note that I’m focused on organisations or individuals whose main output is research or similar things (e.g., summaries or podcast episodes focusing on ideas from researchers). I think some other types of orgs (e.g., SHIC, EA London) decently often run surveys on the quality and/or impact of their work, but that’s not my focus here.
