About mindfulness: I have been meditating daily for a few years and have tried a bunch of different apps.
The one I can recommend the most and use personally is Waking Up (https://wakingup.com/). Not only is it IMO the best app for mindfulness meditation, but they are also EA aligned. They signed the GWWC pledge and were among the first batch of companies to do so. If you can’t afford the subscription, you can email them and get it for free.
Would be curious to hear what experiences others have had with meditation apps.
+1 for the Waking Up recommendation. Definitely the best meditation app I’ve used, with a lot of interesting content around what it means to live well more generally, plus the series with Will MacAskill on EA. I’m planning to do a proper write-up of meditation and mindfulness benefits and options in the near future.
My favourite is Ten Percent Happier – it’s very accessible and it has a lot of meditations and teachings by Joseph Goldstein, who also appears in the lectures in Waking Up.
I’ve also found some value from Sam Harris’s meditations, especially the early ones he released long before the app.
Ten Percent Happier don’t have the free option AFAIK, but they do have an 8-part free intro. And they have significant discounts at times through the year.
I agree on the Waking Up app. I have tried Headspace, Calm and Waking Up and found Waking Up to be the best choice for me. Specifically, the Theory section has been helpful to me as a beginner trying to learn about meditation. I also appreciate that it lacks some feature that I find corny in other apps, such as celebrity cameos. However, it may not be best people who don’t care for Sam Harris due to his various political positions, or those who do like him, but associate his voice with his podcast.
