Context: I am a person who faces harassment in my life sometimes, though not (yet) in EA spaces.
I think itās interesting to hear your experience of the situations you have got yourself into. Iāll leave dissecting any issues with the post to others.
Do you feel like any of the advice you received was more effective than other pieces of advice? I would like to know what kind of advice I could give someone in your approximate situation in order to help them change their behavior and avoid a ban.
Perhaps, āTake this extremely seriously. Imagine how I [you] am feeling right now, do you really want to cause that?ā and maybe āIf you continue to cause issues like this, things probably wonāt go well for you and is this really a good place for you?ā
Perhaps show them this piece? I think many people can improve at this, but those that canāt would probably be better served by leaving earlier.
Sorry to hear about the harassment, glad itās not happened in EA spaces, they tend to be pretty careful about this stuff.
Having thought a bit more about this, maybe ālisten. listen. listenā. I think Iām often incurious about the feelings of others, perhaps because I donāt really expect myself to understand what upset them. Easier for me, sometimes to come up with a hard and fast rule āask before you touch peopleā ādonāt flirt at this eventā than to really get it.
I guess I could just pay a lot more attention to why people are upset in the first place. And perhaps sort of give up on really understanding in order to just listen. Thatās my current approach anyway.
