About the Position

Epoch is seeking a specialist in computing hardware to lead investigations into HPC computing for AI workloads. As a Machine Learning Hardware Researcher at Epoch, you will collaborate with our team on novel research related to the cost of compute, trends in compute usage and performance, and parallelism techniques and utilization. This work will be crucial for improving our understanding of the future of AI and its impacts on society.

Your day-to-day activities will be researching the latest developments in the field, discussing their implications with our team and international experts, and writing reports that inform our research and policy-making all over the world. Over the course of a year, we anticipate our ML hardware Researcher will have produced 3-4 leading reports on ML Hardware.

An ideal candidate for this role would have deep knowledge of how Machine Learning training clusters are built and managed, intellectual curiosity, and be skilled at communicating technical topics clearly. Industry experience or a PhD on a related topic are desirable, though not necessary.

While we welcome applicants from all time zones, you may be expected to attend meetings during working hours between UTC-8 and UTC+3 time zones, where most of our staff are based. This role is open only to full-time candidates who are available to work at 40 hours per week.

The successful candidate will report directly to director Jaime Sevilla, and work closely with associate director Tamay Besiroglu on models of the future of AI, and with our data scientist Robi Rahman on efforts to gather data on ML hardware.

Key Responsibilities

As a ML Hardware Researcher, your main responsibilities will entail:

  • Producing reports and papers related to the design, production and usage of hardware in Machine Learning.

  • Staying abreast of industry trends and emerging technologies in ML hardware

  • Helping steer Epoch’s research program with ideas on hardware-related matters.

  • Being the go-to expert for staff and stakeholders’ queries on ML hardware.

What We Are Looking For

Skills and Competencies:

  • Familiarity with modern Machine Learning hardware, HPC set-ups and their management.

  • Clear communication skills on technical topics.

  • Intellectual curiosity and open-mindedness

Knowledge and Experience:

  • Experience working with hardware used in AI and machine learning.

  • Experience writing analysis reports or scientific papers related to hardware

(Desired but not essential)

  • Experience in distributed training of large models

  • A network of industry and academia experts on Machine Learning hardware.

What We Offer

Compensation:

  • Annual salary between the following ranges for a full-time position:

    • $70,000 - $80,000 USD pre-tax for people with less than two years of relevant research or industry experience. $80,000 − 100,000 USD for people with more than two years of relevant experience.

    • £57,900 - £66,200 GBP pre-tax (or £66,200 - £86,600 for people with more than two years of relevant experience).

    • €66,500 - €76,000 EUR pre-tax (or €76,000 - €95,000 for people with more than two years of relevant experience).

  • The exact salary will be based on the candidate’s prior relevant experience.

  • Compensation is not restricted to the currencies listed above. Payments may be made in different currencies and payment intervals depending on the location of applicants and legal requirements.
