Adam Mastroianni: So you wanna de-bog yourself (“Some problems are like getting a diploma: you work at it for a while, and then you’re done forever. Learning how to ride a bike is a classic diploma problem. But most problems aren’t like that. They’re more like toothbrushing problems: you have to work at them forever until you die. You can’t, as far as I know, just brush your teeth really really well and then let ’em ride forever.”)
The situation is quite different when it comes to the term “Catholic,” as the Catholic Church is effectively an organization with clearly defined decision-making rules; it is clear who is authorized to speak for the Church and who decides on—and is responsible for—imposing sanctions when church officials or sub-organizations behave inappropriately. Perhaps the term “Christian” serves as a better point of comparison. However, when considering the impact on reputation, one should focus on a specific religion and put oneself in the shoes of people who know very little about that religion and are now receiving a few additional pieces of information about it.
