Congratulations to the EA Project For Awesome 2024 team, who managed to raise over $100k for AMF, GiveDirectly and ProVeg International by submitting promotional/informational videos to the project.
There’s been an effort to raise money for effective charities via Project For Awesome since 2017, and it seems like a really productive effort every time. Thanks to all involved!
One habit to make that second piece of advice stick even more that I often recommend: introduce people to other people as soon as you think of it (i.e. pause the conversation and send them an email address or list of names or open a thread between the two people).
I often pause 1:1s to find links or send someone a message because I’m prone to forgetting to do follow-up actions unless I immediately do it (or write it down).

The CEA events team is hiring for several roles, all of which can be either remote or Oxford-based:
Project Manager (Apply by April 8th): You’ll collaborate with experts and provide end-to-end event support to make events happen that could be valuable for making progress in their fields, and which might not happen otherwise.
Events Associate (Apply by April 8th): You’ll support the planning and execution of our events and play a key role in enhancing their impact.
Events Generalist (expression of interest): Join our team and support our expanding portfolio of events through work on admissions, content, event design, production, or volunteer management.

Yes, unfortunately, the EAGxLondon team couldn’t secure a date in early April. The university venue we were working with initially said that they had dates available in April but, frustratingly, this turned out not to be the case and the team didn’t have enough time to find an alternative. We’re exploring other options, including an event later this year.
Next month, two EAGx events are happening in new locations: Austin and Copenhagen!

These conferences are primarily for people who are at least familiar with the core ideas of effective altruism and are interested in learning more about what to do with these ideas. We’re particularly excited to welcome people working professionally in the EA space to connect with others nearby and provide mentorship to those new to the space.
If you want to attend but are unsure about whether to apply, please err on the side of applying!

Yes, we also run follow-up surveys, usually 3 months after the event. We think these are better for measuring impact.
We don’t expect attendees to estimate the overall impact of the event for them while at the event, that’s our mistake (we had written “The EA Global team uses several key metrics to estimate the impact of our events” but we’ve changed that to “The EA Global team tracks several key metrics for our events”).
We do ask for valuable experiences, but we’re not asking people to estimate the impact of the event, per se. Our post-event metrics primarily track if the event is something they’d recommend to others, and if it seemed like a good use of their time which are decent proxies for overall event quality and value.
There are other surveys such as Open Phil’s Longtermist Survey and the EA Survey which ask people (often several years after the event) whether it played an important role in their career.
