“democratic culture” → could you elaborate why this is a cultural thing?
I take it as about equality
I am surprised and disappointed that this got downvoted; this comment to me is a perfectly reasonable and respectful discussion
I think it is interesting to view abortion as killing “lives”; the suffering for fetus is very low if aborted, and suffering for the human is very high if not. Abortion right is quite essential for equality in my opinion.
Personal take—it feels to me MZ is more about profits (given recent events as well), and if something does not give back a monetary return, I doubt it would attract him
I am not completely sure on the emphasizing of the community building based on fun part - that might be what fundamentally I view differently on; I believe people should best be united by passion/values and the things to do, the other stuff seems a bit for entertaining/personal/socializing purposes (and harder to be unified on), less for “a community with a goal” type of organizations (which could def happen in smaller subsets/scale) - people who are passionate about the values will stick around anyways is my take/current thought
On being cheerful though- that part I agree. I like posts celebrating progress as well
I do feel like the issues we are addressing might not be always changing frequently as we have not solved many things yet, but what could be new is the solution to solve them
Personal take: with the kind of work EA is mainly about (practice altruism, reduce suffering, tackle serious issues), it is very hard to be very “fun” about it. I don’t think it is about perfect grammar (I am sure you can still have grammar mistakes while being serious), but it is more about the “boundary” of “fun” and how sometimes the non-serious tone is correlated with non-serious attitude towards certain topics, and that may not be helpful to address those topics.
I think you call out a really good problem, I did not downvote, but I may have an idea of why it was downvoted. The problem somewhat do exist, also with race and gender, but the issue might not be resume or hiring strategy (target schools) alone
Agree/support with the idea/a lot of these points, and also 4 particularly; for “1. Shouldn’t there be an academic discipline specifically dedicated to the phenomenon of suffering?” I have been thinking how exactly economic disparity contribute to suffering risks, and if this is one reliable causal reason for systematic crime
To wrap up previous 2024:
ACLU
Doctors without borders
RAINN
UNICEF USA
I think there is the possibility that he focused on the seemingly “right” goal, in the wrong way.
Appreciate the post! Maybe explore different charity topics, get hands on with volunteering, talk to/see the people who suffer (it might be hard from time to time so also make sure your are mentally prepared, but this might be the only way to get very direct information on what is going on in the world, how and why), and decide how you could help with your skill sets
I am wondering the same and thus reading this now. Was reading some posts recently: https://thailand.iom.int/stories/forced-crime-trafficking-survivors-thailand-tell-their-stories
This paragraph from it is also interesting “Over the next half-year, Ahmad would be forced to scam people through a fake Twitter profile, posing as an attractive young woman. “My task was to collect people’s WhatsApp numbers, after which I would pass them on to another team to continue the scam.” This may explain both why there so many Twitter fake profile, and also rising number of phone scams.
https://thailand.un.org/en/275298-8-facts-you-need-know-about-human-trafficking-21st-century
This report dated 30 July 2024: “Human trafficking manifests in many forms. UNODC’s latest research shows that 38.7 per cent of victims are trafficked for sexual exploitation, which takes place on the streets, in brothels, massage centres, hotels or bars. The victims – mainly women and girls – often experience extreme violence and abuse.
A further 38.8 per cent are exploited for forced labour. Some people work long hours in factories, for minimal or no pay, producing clothes, computers or phones. Others work on fields, plantations or fishing boats – often in harsh weather – cultivating corn, rice or wheat, harvesting coffee and cocoa beans or catching fish and seafood. ”
It is probably one of the first times I became aware how operationalized this is, and how police are also corrupted and could be working with these organizations. https://www.state.gov/reports/2024-trafficking-in-persons-report/thailand/
We are (or at least I am) incredibly privileged and naive for not being aware of how big of an issue this was. A Chinese actor https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/cd606l1407no was also kidnapped. Based on comments from social media, these practice are becoming more operationalized in recent years.
Thanks for sharing this! I was looking at https://www.givingwhatwecan.org/best-charities-to-donate-to-2024# to find some good related NGOs to donate to for a friend’s birthday but didn’t find a section in the front page (maybe in some subpages?). But I will donate to some of the orgs mentioned here!
I am also feeling that there could be many other survival problems (jobs, equality, etc) in the society, that makes them feel this problem could still be very far. But I know of a friend who try to work on AI governance and raise more awareness.
Appreciate the post, and I see this very valuable to raise, as I have similar thoughts, but didn’t see many posts discussing/raising this. One of my worries is that without awareness and perspective from different groups, we will make decisions that are biased by human nature (not by intention), and would probably also effect prioritization decisions. I have also encountered situations from related community where they have mentioned “rape is a side effect of erotic excitement, and so probably should not work towards getting rid of it because that means getting rid of erotic excitement”, which again may not be intentional, but poorly aware/educated.
Thanks for the post. Your post/chart is exactly what I have been thinking about and recently, and glad to see someone started the conversation in 2022.
I once saw a post https://www.alignmentforum.org/posts/ho63vCb2MNFijinzY/agi-safety-career-advice that is specific to AI, detailed the directions within both research and governance, and found it useful. Maybe some general education post (but on more general EA topics) like this would be very helpful.
I think it might be fine if people have genuine interest in research (though had to be intrinsic motivation), which will make their learning fast with more devoted energy. But overall generally I see a lot of value in operations/management/application work, as it gives people opportunities to learn how to land research into real impacts, and how tricky sometimes real world or applications can be.
I see generally this may be good, but there are cases that require more socially aware education to be discussed. Additionally, this discussion seems to be from a view that is unfortunately only negatively affect or restrict half of the humans; it seems to be easy for the humans who are not affected to discuss on restricting; the barrier is unfairly lower unfortunately by human nature. I do think writers need to bear some responsibility for knowledge/background learning
