The next workshop with @Manuel Allgaier has been scheduled for Nov 27 (Mon): AI Risk Scenario Roleplay (repeat from EAGxBerlin)
Iād love to see you there!
The next workshop with @nina antonyuk has been scheduled for Oct 16 (Mon): Why weāre bad at predicting what will make us happy
Iād love to see you there!
I know Iām late to the party, but thanks for the data!
One question: Why does your number for 2019 so different from 80Kās estimates (https://āā80000hours.org/āā2021/āā08/āāeffective-altruism-allocation-resources-cause-areas/āā)?
Iāve bothered @GuyP about it and heās on it!
Quick heads up: Most of the RSVPs are on Meetup.com or LessWrong, so donāt worry about being alone. :)
The next workshop with @Severin has also been scheduled for just a week later (Mo, Sep 18): The Art of Difficult Conversations
The next topic will be Personal Privacy on Sep 12.
@GuyP will teach us about digital privacy.
Weāll go over who should and shouldnāt care for their digital privacy, the value of personal data, its effects on the people around you and what are the lesser-known low-hanging fruits to improve your standing in the digital age.
Speaking from experience, those events go well past 10 pm.
Thank you very much for sharing your insightful and motivating story.
But Iād like to advise to always be wary of survivorship bias. People who burned out are much less likely to write about it than someone who made it.
Parallel to this, I gained the confidence to decline job offers from EA-aligned organisations that I perceived as having less impact, despite their appeal. Some opportunities involved leading teams at EA-aligned startups. However, accepting them would have meant deviating from the top causes on my list. Instead of settling for the next available option, I aimed high, seeking roles that matched exceptionally well with my skills and the cause areas I had on the top of my list.
Hey everyone, Unfortunately the CCCB is not available today, so the workshop is happening at TEAMWORK. Hereās how to get there: https://āābit.ly/āāteamwork-berlin
Sorry for the short notice.
The next topic will be Doing a āfull-time mental health sabbaticalā on Jul 18.
Anton will try to convince us to spend some time to work on our mental health full-time.
And why shouldnāt we? Long-term mental health is important for everyone, regardless of whether we have current problems or not. He already gave the talk at the Summer Camp a few weeks ago, and it was one of the best attended sessions.
I like the new name and meeting outside!
Donāt let perfect be the enemy of good.
As you say that we shouldnāt ignore system 1 completely, just because itās uninformed and unadjusted, we shouldnāt ignore utilitarianism.
I feel utilitarianism works quite well, when we stop and consider when what weāre doing feels off.
Relevant quote by Eliezer (https://āātwitter.com/āāesyudkowsky/āāstatus/āā1497157447219232768):
Go three-quarters of the way from deontology to utilitarianism and then stop. You are now in the right place. Stay there at least until you have become a god.
Iāve just created the event for the next workshop on Jun 20 (Tue), Climate Change (Shenanigans Workshop)
Everyone knows about climate change by now, but the exact consequences of rising temperatures are still unpredictable. While there are promising approaches, the issue is highly politicized and the benefits of many popular initiatives are questionable. And what is the potential of new approaches yet to come? Do we even have enough time?
Iām happy to see you there again if youāre interested in that topic as well. :)
Belief: I thought Russia would not invade Ukraine until it actually happened.
Reasoning: Russia is intertwined too closely with the EU and especially Germany. The CIA is lying/āexaggerating to disrupt the cooperation.
What was I (possibly) trying to protect: I might have held economic partnership and entwinement in too high regard. I also might have thought that war in Europe was a thing of the past.
Iām trying to keep track of when I change my mind, but itās hard to notice when it happens and what exactly I thought before!
Can you give an update on the RCT?
Iāve just created the event for the next workshop on May 16, Teaching how to teach (Shenanigans Workshop).
An amateurās unqualified musings on learning and relating
Weaving together mindfulness, rationality, teaching and authentic relating.
Weāll explore something in the direction of how to teach yourself, teaching as a metaphor for relating, and how to apply insights from it to what you care about.
Iām happy to see you there again if youāre interested in that topic as well. :)
b. Moreover, the usage of insect feed may provide chickens the ability to forage and select what specific insect they want which is a behavioral trait insects keenly prefer as opposed to not having that choice.
Should the second āinsectsā be a āchickensā?
Great article, Iāve not thought about it in that much depth.
In Germany, the debate focuses solely on insects for human consumption at the moment.
Since we talked about calibration and I suggested exercising the right confidence intervals: Thereās a website for that!
https://āāprograms.clearerthinking.org/āācalibrate_your_judgment.html
I advise against trying to read 1/āday blindly, since there are monsters like A Technical Explanation of Technical Explanation (nearly 17k words), one needs to set aside time for.
